What are Hatch Patterns?

Introduction to Hatch Patterns

Hatch patterns are essential tools in computer-aided design (CAD) software. They fill areas with repeating designs that simulate various textures. These patterns are invaluable in architectural, engineering, and product design, providing an accurate representation of materials like wood, slate, and stone.

By using hatch patterns, designers can create detailed and realistic textures that enhance the visual appeal and accuracy of their projects. The patterns can be created using different thread types, such as solid, gradient, and texture threads, each affecting the final appearance of the texture. Whether you’re aiming to replicate the intricate wood grain of hardwood or the rugged texture of stone, hatch patterns are a versatile and powerful tool in your drafting arsenal.

Over 40 Unique Wood Hatch Patterns Plus More

How to Use Wood Hatch Patterns in AutoCAD

Using wood hatch patterns in AutoCAD can significantly enhance the visual appeal of your architectural designs. Here’s a step-by-step example of how to apply a wood hatch pattern and adjust its size using the Properties palette:

Open Your Drawing: Start by opening the AutoCAD drawing where you want to apply the wood hatch pattern.

Access the Hatch Command: Type HATCH into the command line or select the Hatch tool from the Draw panel on the Ribbon.

Select a Wood Hatch Pattern: In the Custom tab, click on the pattern swatch. Browse through the available patterns and select a wood hatch pattern from the palette. When selecting a wood hatch pattern, consider using end grain patterns to accurately represent cut sections of wood in your architectural drawings.

Apply the Hatch: Click inside the area where you want to apply the wood hatch pattern. The selected pattern will fill the area.

Open the Properties Palette: With the hatch pattern selected, press CTRL+1 to open the Properties palette. This palette allows you to modify various properties of the selected hatch.

Adjust the Scale: Locate the ‘Scale’ field in the Properties palette. Enter a new value to resize the hatch pattern according to your design needs. A smaller value will make the pattern denser, while a larger value will spread it out more.

Finalize the Hatch: Once you are satisfied with the appearance of the wood hatch pattern, press Enter to finalize the changes.

Following these steps, you can effectively utilize wood hatch patterns in AutoCAD to create realistic wood grain textures, enhancing the depth and detail of your projects. Whether you’re working on an elevation or an architectural detail, these hatch patterns can add a professional touch to your work.

Creating Hatch Patterns

Creating hatch patterns allows designers to tailor their designs to meet specific project requirements. In CAD software like Autodesk AutoCAD, users can utilize the “Hatch and Fill” tool to define the properties of their custom patterns. This includes the scale of the hatch abd setting the angle of the pattern. By saving these settings you can ensure hatch patterns you can then reuse then in future projects templates, ensuring consistency and efficiency. These wood grain textures or stone patterns are an indispensable tool for architects and engineers looking to add professional looking detail to their drawings.

Stretch 3D solids in AutoCAD - Easy to use AutoCAD add-on for any type of 3D drawing.

Need to stretch 3D objects in AutoCAD?

3D Stretch

Looking for a way to stretch a 3D object in AutoCAD? Now, you can stretch either one solid or an entire group of solids to whatever dimension you require. Surpasses the stretching functionality of even the latest version of AutoCAD!

3D Stretch – Works Just Like AutoCAD Stretching
‍

The 3D Stretch routine works just like AutoCAD’s regular 2D stretch command or the 2D multi-stretch utility found inside Express Tools. Stretch objects easily without redrawing!

‍
• Works in top, front and side view
• Use it with a quick command startup to autoload the 3d stretch command
• Supports multi-stretch and equally divides stretch distance by number of selections
• Simple to use and zero learning curve
• Stretch by referencing using the “From” command
• Keeps track total objects stretched for complex editing
• Also supports Isometric view but be careful when gathering objects!
‍

How do you stretch a 3D object In AutoCAD?

‍
To make a 3D stretch, simply create a crossing window around the objects, then right-click and enter a distance (or use your mouse to reference it in space or from an existing object in your drawing.
‍
With 3D Stretch you can easily work from Top View, Bottom View, Left View, Right View, Front view or Back View.

‍
It even allows multiple 3D stretching …
‍

You can also perform multiple stretches on multiple 3D solids at one time. As an added feature multiple stretching will equally divide each element so that proportions will always be the same. For example if stretching 3 windows in a side elevation view using multiple stretch of 12”, each window will slide over 4”.

‍
Will work in Isometric view but outcome will vary due to the selection of objects gathered by the utility.

Note: Codes are computer specific and non-transferable.
‍

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about how to stretch 3D objects in AutoCAD!

Additional Tips for Using Dynamic Doors & Windows Blocks

Wall Masking: The blocks automatically “break” the wall using a masking feature.

Frame Specifications: 1 ½” wide frames are generated by default, adjusted to the total wall depth.

Door/Window Tags: Circular door/window tags include names and dimensions (in feet and inches).

Layering: Each component (frame, door panel, glazing, sill, swing arc, and tag) is on a separate layer for enhanced control.

TOOLPALETTES: Drag and drop blocks directly into your drawing using TOOLPALETTES.

Wipeout Settings: Set the wipeout frame to OFF, and use Color 178 with screening set to 0 in your plot style file (ctb).

REGEN Command: After stretching doors or windows, use REGEN to update the width or frame depth automatically.

Field Display: Set FIELDDISPLAY= 0 to avoid a grey background on width attributes.

Attribute Input: Set ATTDIA= 1 to enable attribute value input.

Drawing single and double doors in AutoCAD

How to draw doors with the single and double door utility

If you are looking for a fast method of drawing doors we recommended an add-on. This simple routine draws and insert doors in AutoCAD for you using 4 basic steps.

Here is an example of how to draw a door:

Enter Door Width In Feet Or Inches Ie. 36 For 36 Inches

Enter The Distance From The Reference Point To The Wall Opening Ie. “4”

Pick Reference Point Ie. The Corner Where 2 Walls Meet

Pick On Same Face To Set Ie. The Opening Side

Pick Opposite Wall Face Ie. The Exterior Side

Pick Point Close To Hinge

Enter Door Tag

The routine will also draw double doors using the ADD command

Why use a routine to draw your doors?

Draw doors and trim within wall

Create a single and double doors at any angle. Walls are automatically trimmed as door inserts into wall.
See also PDF on how to create a door and tag

This AutoCAD add-on will also draw a door tag automatically – plus the door label created also retains size in feet, inches, and fractional inches as block attributes.

Breaks the wall and inserts tag

“Breaks” the wall and draws doors with end caps.

Inserts door tag

Easily customize the tag if desired

Draws single and double doors at any angle

Creates 2” deep jambs, 1 ¾” deep door leaves, swinging arcs.

Includes circular shape door tag insertion.

For pair of doors, in case the leaves have different size, the routine allows the user to specify the size of the active leaf.

Allows you to insert doors, jambs and symbol on different layers.

Supports both Metric and Imperial (Standard US)

Runs in latest version of AutoCAD Full Version

Creates block attributes – tag is easily customizable

This door routine also inserts a circular shape tag (defined in dr-type.dwg) which contains attributes such as door tag (typed by the user) and door width (in feet, inches and fractional inches) automatically added into the bottom portion of the bubble.

This block contains AutoCAD attributes which can be extracted with into a table (not included). The user can also customize and edit the tag shape simply by redefining the dwg file. The text size of the door label is set for working drawings on a scale of ¼”=1’. The text font can be set using the Autocad Text Style dialog box.

Count Any Autocad Entity

Count & Highlight, is a powerful and very easy to use add-on for AutoCAD 2004 – 2019. Now you have the solution to count and locate entities in AutoCAD.

Search for the attributes , coordinate values, elevation symbols, lost point entities … and more!! Very useful for checking drawings done by others. Highlighting works also in maximized viewports.

We hear these complaints all the time:

“…I’m tired of searching objects on my drawings…”
“I need to count entities real fast…”
“…watching the whole drawing, need the location of one specific entity at a glance…”

That’s why we created Count & Highlight!

This application, lets you search throughout your drawing, entities of any type and have them highlighted by means of the grip feature. You also will get a count of the selected entity sorted by layout tab. Then it’s your choice to move, copy or delete the highlighted entities by editing the selection.

At the command line just type CnH and then, the capital letter of any of the following entities:
Line, Polyline, 3dpolyline, Mline, Arc, Circle, Dimension, Ellipse, POInt, Text, MText, Hatch, Region, Solid, Spline, Trace, Image, Block, BWAtt (Block with attributes), BNAtt (Block with no attributes), or ATTribute-value.

You’ll watch all required entities being highlighted (turned-on grips), and get the count of them at the command line in no time.
‍

Count & Highlight Features:

Searches and counts any AutoCAD entity.

Searches blocks, attribute values and texts, by specific user input.

At the command line, a list of found objects and their quantities is displayed.

Highlights all required entities on the current Layout or Model tab.

Invisible attributes are counted and located on the drawing.

Count & Highlight Blocks:

‍The options for blocks to be found and highlighted, are as follows:
BWAtt Either searches for all blocks with attributes or by specific block name.
BNAtt Either searches for all blocks with NO attributes or by specific block name.
ATTribute-value. Searches for all blocks that contain the specified attribute value. Alerts the user for invisible attributes.
Block Searches for all type of blocks or by specific block name.

Count & Highlight Text and MText:

Both options search for all entities of each type. If the entity is a Text, it can be found by specific text input. Upper, lowercase and combination of both occurrences are all highlighted and counted for Text entities.

Count:

On the command line, after highlighting, you´ll get the quantity of all occurrences of the selected objects sorted by “Model and “Layout” tabs.
Warning: The search goes thru the whole drawing data base. Highlighted entities and quantities may not match if some layers are Frozen. For best results hit “Esc” after each search.

Color and size:

In order to change the color of highlighting, type GRIPCOLOR and enter the desired color number.
To return to the default grip color do the same according to your version of AutoCAD: Ver. 2004-2008 Color=160. Ver. 2009-2024 Color=150.
For size change type GRIPSIZE. Default=5.

BLKCOUNT function:

Type “BLKCOUNT” and you´ll get a handy list of all blocks sorted by layout tab plus the quantity of each block name.
ACOUNT function:
This function lets you get a list of all attribute values and their quantities sorted by layout tab.
1ACOUNT function:
Same as Acount, but only gets the list of the 1º attribute of the block. Useful to get a quick count of doors, windows or any other object symbol. As always you´ll get the location in the drawing thru an automatic grip highlighting.

ALL function:
‍

Type “ALL” and you´ll get a count of all objects sorted by layout tab and the total quantity. You´ll see all the highlighted entities on the current layout tab. You´ll find “lost” or “far away” entities on huge drawings.
For clarity, the viewport as an entity is not considered, and it’s excluded from the count.

CTEXT function:

Useful to get a quick list and count of all unique text occurrences, sorted by layout tab.For long text lists press “F2” to access the AutoCAD text window.
